Arkansas 42, Auburn 17

FAYETTEVILE, Ark., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Freshman quarterback Matt Jones passed for a touchdown and ran for another Saturday as Arkansas surprised 17th-ranked Auburn, 42-17, in a Southeastern Conference game.

It has been a struggle offensively for the Razorbacks, who have used three quarterbacks this season. Saturday, Jones got his chance to shine, and the true freshman responded in a big way.

Jones, who had not thrown a pass this season, connected with Richard Smith on a 31-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter, giving the Razorbacks a 14-3 advantage.

Jones also scored on a 32-yard run early in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 35-17. He carried 10 times for 99 yards and completed his only pass in three attempts for his touchdown.

Cedric Cobb had a five-yard touchdown run and Jermaine Petty brought back an interception 80 yards for a score for Arkansas (4-3, 2-3 SEC West), which matched its highest offensive output of the season.

Carnell Williams scored on a 55-yard touchdown run for the Tigers (6-2, 4-1 West), who were playing their first conference game since upsetting then-No. 2 Florida, 23-20, two weeks ago.
