Hurricanes blast West Virginia
MIAMI, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Ken Dorsey tossed the 47th and 48th touchdown passes of his career Thursday night to tie the school mark shared by Vinny Testaverde and Steve Walsh as the top-ranked Miami Hurricanes cruised to a 45-3 Big East Conference victory over West Virginia.
Dorsey, who improved to 20-1 as a starter, matched the record with a 14-yard tochdown toss to Andre Johnson 1:14 into the fourth quarter. He also connected with Jeremy Shockey for a six-yard score in the second period.
With Walsh watching from Miami's sideline, Dorsey completed 16 of 27 passes for 192 yards. Much of the contest was played in light to moderate showers.
Playing their first game since ending Florida State's 37-game home winning streak on Oct. 13, the Hurricanes (6-0, 3-0 Big East) shook off some early rust to record their 16th straight victory.
The winning streak is the second-longest in Division I-A behind that of Oklahoma, which takes a 20-game winning streak into Saturday's show against Nebraska.
But the Hurricanes are just fourth in the BCS poll due to a schedule that ranks 92nd out of 117 schools in degree of difficulty.
Colts fight off Chiefs
KANSAS CITY, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Dominic Rhodes returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and raced 77 yards for the clinching score Thursday night as the Indianapolis Colts held off the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-28.
Rhodes, a rookie running back from Midwestern (Texas) State, had just six carries and one reception totaling 64 yards in the first six games. He plays primarily on special teams and backs up workhorse Edgerrin James.
Indianapolis improved to 3-3 while the Chiefs fell to 1-6.
After the Chiefs closed to within 10-6 on a 22-yard field goal by Todd Peterson early in the third quarter, Rhodes fielded the ensuing kickoff at the 12, made a couple of quick moves, burst up the middle and raced untouched to the end zone.
The Colts opened a 28-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Chiefs came back. Trent Green's 11-yard touchdown pass to Larry Parker halved the deficit with 4:45 remaining and Kansas City forced a punt and got back the ball on its 47 with 3:59 to go.
Green completed a long pass to tight end Tony Gonzalez that gave the Chiefs a first down at the 11. But he made three errant throws into the end zone with the last going into double coverage and getting picked off by rookie cornerback Idrees Bashir.
James had 102 yards on 27 carries but left with a hyperextended knee on the previous possession. That brought on Rhodes, who broke through a stacked defensive front and rumbled down the right sideline to make it 35-21 with 1:02 to play.
Blackhawks win sixth straight
CHICAGO, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Eric Daze had a goal and two assists and Jocelyn Thibault made 22 saves Thursday night as the surprising Chicago Blackhawks extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 4-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.
After the first half of the game was scoreless, Daze put the Blackhawks on the board with his seventh goal of the season 11:06 into the second period.
Daze took a loose puck at the red line, crossed the blue line and from the right faceoff circle wristed a shot through Sharks defenseman Bryan Marchment's legs. The puck went past the left post over goaltender Evgeni Nabokov's stick side.
The Blackhawks' next two goals came with the man advantage on consecutive penalties by the Sharks.
Newcomer Jon Klemm scored his second goal of the season with 3:03 left in the period. During a two-man advantage, Klemm was in the right slot and fired home a wrist shot to make it 2-0.
Just 43 seconds later, Klemm set up Kyle Calder, who tipped in the puck from the left side of Nabokov for his sixth goal of the season.
The Sharks scored twice in the third, but Alexei Zhamnov had an empty-net goal with 51 seconds remaining.

Carter outplays Michael Jordan
TORONTO Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Vince Carter outdueled Michael Jordan in their first meeting Thursday night, scoring 18 of his 31 points in the first quarter and taking over the game with Alvin Williams in the third period to carry the Toronto Raptors past the Washington Wizards, 113-96.
Known as "Air Canada," Carter made 10 of 23 shots, including four of seven from three-point range, and was perfect in seven attempts from the line. He also had five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Washington had a 70-69 lead with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter when Williams made a three-pointer to spark an 11-1 run that gave the Raptors the lead for good. Williams scored six points during the spurt and Carter five.
Williams finished with 17 points and dished out five assists.
Jordan scored half his 22 points in the first quarter and made just five of 17 shots. He did most of his damage from the line, where he was 12 of 12.
Antonio Davis had 20 points and seven rebounds and Tracy Murray scored 15 points for Toronto (5-1).
Hakeem Olajuwon scored just two points, but grabbed 15 rebounds and had two blocks in 24 minutes. Jerome Williams added 12 points and four rebounds.

Coleman part of three-team trade
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- With a banged-up roster and the regular season quickly approaching, the Philadelphia 76ers decided to gamble Thursday that Derrick Coleman has something left after 11 trying NBA seasons.
The 76ers re-acquired the enigmatic power forward from the Charlotte Hornets in a three-team deal involving seven players.
Coleman spent three turbulent seasons in Philadelphia, never playing more than 59 games because of an assortment of ailments. He eventually became a free agent after the 76ers did not exercise his option following the 1997-98 campaign.
Joining Coleman in Philadelphia will be forward Corie Blount and guard Vonteego Cummings, who come over from the Golden State Warriors.
The 76ers shipped forwards George Lynch, Jerome Moiso and Robert Traylor to the Hornets while dealing forward Cedric Henderson and a conditional first-round draft pick in 2005 to the Warriors.
USA withdraws from Fed Cup
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- The United States will not participate in the Federation Cup finals next month in Madrid, Spain due to concerns over the current international crisis.
The United States Tennis Association said Thursday the situation created by the recent terrorist attacks made it "inadvisable" for American athletes to compete abroad as a team.
The USTA added that the decision to withdraw from the tournament, scheduled for Nov. 7-11, came after input from U.S. captain Billie Jean King, players and government officals.
The United States is the two-time defending champion of the event. The ITF will announce a nation to replace the United States and join Spain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Argentina, Russia and Australia.
Davenport reaches Austrian quarterfinals
LINZ, Austria, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Top seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States moved into the quarterfinals of the Generali Ladies Open Thursday, but No. 2 Justine Henin of Belgium was not as fortunate.
While Davenport, the defending champion, defeated Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic, 7-6, (8-6), 6-0, Henin was upset by Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan, 6-7 (1-7), 6-0, 6-3.
The 25-year-old Davenport has won her last two tournaments. Sunday's victory at the Swisscom Challenge at Zurich was her sixth title of the season and 36th of her career.
She has not lost before the quarterfinals of any of the 15 tournaments she has played this year, despite missing three months in the middle of the season with a right knee bone bruise.
Henin, the Wimbledon finalist, became the No. 2 seed on the eve of the tournament when Venus Williams withdrew with a wrist injury.
Crew extends coach's contract
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Greg Andrulis, who guided the Columbus Crew to a franchise-record nine-game unbeaten streak during the past season, has agreed to terms on a two-year contract.
The deal runs through the 2003 season, but no financial terms were disclosed.
After being promoted to coach on May 17, the 43-year-old Andrulis compiled a 12-4-4 record -- including the 7
2 stretch from July 4-Aug. 19 -- as the Crew earned the No. 4 seed in the MLS Cup playoffs.
Columbus was knocked from the postseason tournament by San Jose in the quarterfinals.
Singh shares Buick Challenge lead
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh, who has earned more than $3 million this year without winning a title, carded an 8-under-par 64 Thursday to share the first-round lead with Geoff Ogilvy at the Buick Challenge.
Fourth on the money list with $3,250,429, Singh has 13 top-10 finishes, including runner-ups at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and The Players Championship. The Fiji native has not finished first on the PGA Tour since capturing The Masters last year, but did win twice early this season on the international portion of the European Tour.
Ogilvy earned a spot on the tour at Qualifying School last fall and is 92nd on the money list with $525,338. He has just two top-10 finishes, with his best performance a tie for second at the Honda Classic in May.
Joel Edwards, Sweden's Per-Ulrik Johansson, Neal Lancaster, Mike Sposa and Danny Ellis were tied for third at 7-under 65 at the Callaway Gardens Resort.
Former Masters champion Mark O'Meara and Argentine rookie Jose Coceres, the winner at last week's National Car Rental Classic, were at 66.
Coceres is trying to crash the top 30 on the money list and qualify for next week's Tour Championship in Houston. His victory last week allowed him to jump from 56th to 33rd.
Sorenstam wins opening match
NARITA, Japan, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Top seed Annika Sorenstam of Sweden advanced to the second round Thursday as the LPGA Tour returned from a two-week absence at the $960,000 World Ladies Match Play Championship.
Sorenstam, a six-time 2001 LPGA champion, defeated Mineko Nasu from the Japanese LPGA, 3 & 2. She will take on Michele Redman in the next round. Redman topped Kasumi Fujii, 2 & 1.
This is the first match-play event in nine years for the LPGA, which called off last week's tournament in Jeju, Korea as a result of the military action taken by the United States and its allies in Afghanistan.
The 32-player field is comprised of 16 LPGA Tour players and 16 members of the Japanese LPGA Tour.
Boggs resigns from Devil Rays
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Citing a desire to spend more time with his family, Wade Boggs resigned Thursday as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' hitting coach.
Boggs, 43, was named to the position prior to the 2001 season after spending one year in Tampa Bay's front office as special assistant to the general manager. He retired as a player in 1999.
"I'm at a point right now in my life where my family needs me to be around much more than baseball allows me to be," Boggs said. "But I am going to leave the door open to return to the game sometime down the road."
A Tampa native, Boggs spent the final two years of his 18-year career with the Devil Rays and collected his 3,000th hit in a Tampa Bay uniform. He ranks 22nd on the all-time hits list with 3,010.
