Colorado 5, Columbus 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Patrick Roy recorded his 53rd career shutout and Alex Tanguay scored twice in the first period as the Colorado Avalanche rolled to a 5-0 blanking of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The NHL's all-time winningest goaltender, Roy made six saves in the first period and nine in each of the last two for his first shutout of the season.

Losers of three of their previous four games, the Avalanche scored the only goal Roy needed 3:22 into the opening period.

With Blue Jackets rookie Rostislav Klesla in the penalty box for interference, fellow defenseman Rob Blake's slap shot from the right point bounced off the pads of goaltender Ron Tugnutt. Tanguay controlled the rebound and slipped it past Tugnutt's glove side for his first goal of the season.

It snapped the Blue Jackets' streak of 19 consecutive penalty kills.

Nearly 13 minutes later, Tanguay struck again. Blake fired another slap shot from the point and Joe Sakic and Milan Hejduk battled for the rebound. The puck slipped to the far goalpost, where Tanguay jammed it in.

Tanguay, who scored 27 goals last season, ended a three-game points drought.

"Tonight was a must-win," he said. "I think we have to start winning some hockey games. We came out of the gate really well and this is a good step in the right direction."

"Hopefully, it will jump start-us," Sakic added. "Missing (Peter) Forsberg and (Ray) Bourque, two pretty key guys from last year, we have some new faces and we're looking for an identity."

The Blue Jackets had three scoring chances shortly after Tanguay's first goal. With Columbus crashing the net, Roy stopped Espen Knutsen twice and Geoff Sanderson once. The Blue Jackets did not threaten seriously thereafter.

"I thought today was a great game by us," Roy said. "We played well defensively and the guys were sharp."

Shjon Podein angled in a shot from the left side with 95 seconds to go in the period to make it 3-0.

On Friday, Tugnutt made 30 saves to lead the Blue Jackets to their first win of the season. But against the defending Stanley Cup champions, he stopped just 13 of 17 shots before former Avalanche prospect Marc Denis replaced him to start the third period.

"Back-to-back games are not impossible and that is not a good excuse," Blue Jackets coach Dave King said. "We let it be a factor and it shouldn't have been. Colorado's tactic was to come after us early. They got up 3-0 and that was that."

Defenseman Greg de Vries scored on a wraparound in the final minute of the second period and rookie Vaclav Nedorost added a goal late in the third against Denis.

Colorado has outscored Columbus, 22-6, in taking all five meetings over two seasons.
