MIAMI, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Michael Jordan scored 18 points in the first quarter before sitting down for good Saturday night and the Washington Wizards rode the momentum to a 99-79 exhibition victory over the Miami Heat.
Starting at guard instead of small forward and working against the inexperienced Mike James and Ricky Davis, Jordan made seven of 10 shots and four of four free throws, showcasing many of the skills some might have thought had disappeared during his three-year hiatus.
Jordan even flashed his trademark wagging tongue as he beat both Davis and defensive demon Alonzo Mourning with a devastating baseline move, only to see the ball rim out.
The 38-year-old superstar also brought some joy to the court, smiling at the crowd, laughing at his teammates' errant passes and even consoling a forlorn Davis.
After helping Washington open a 33-21 lead after one quarter, Jordan sat the rest of the game. As chants of "We want Mike" rang through American Airlines Arena, the Wizards never looked back.
"He brings us energy, teaching, good habits we can take from here every day," said teammate Richard Hamilton, who also scored 18 points. "My dream was to play against him when I was growing up. Now I'm with him and it's more than a dream come true."
Jordan was not alone in producing for the Wizards (1-1). Courtney Alexander and top overall pick Kwame Brown both showed promise with 15 and eight points.
The Heat (1-2) shot 38 percent from the field. Sam Mack scored 18 points, Mourning added a quiet 15 and Brian Grant grabbed 12 rebounds.
