Miami 49, Florida St. 27

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Top-ranked Miami ended Florida State's decade of home domination Saturday as Ken Dorsey threw three touchdown passes and the Hurricanes scored twice on special teams and once on defense in a 49-27 blasting of the No. 13 Seminoles.

The Hurricanes scored 28 points in the third quarter to end a 37-game winning streak and a 54-unbeaten streak for Florida State on its home field. Miami, which owns the NCAA record with 58 straight home wins, had been the last team to win at Doak Campbell Stadium in 1991.

"It wasn't a beautiful win in any stretch of the imagination and we have some work do to," Miami first-year coach Larry Coker said. "To come in here and win is a great tribute to our players. To come into Doak Campbell Stadium and win, something that hasn't been done in 10 years, we are elated to come away with a win."

Miami (5-0) defeated Florida State for the second straight time after five defeats, posting its highest point total in a 45-game series that dates to 1950.

The Hurricanes won easily in what was expected to be a serious test, jumping to a 21-0 lead and blowing it open in the second half after the Seminoles had cut their deficit to eight points at intermission.

Florida State (3-2) has been beset by a series of injuries, particularly on the offensive line and at wide receiver, and was unable to keep pace with the faster and more talented Hurricanes. The loss also ended any chance of competing for a national championship.

"I told my team that we're going to have to start another streak out there in a couple of weeks," coach Bobby Bowden said. "Nothing lasts forever. If we win all the conference games and are the highest ranked team, we would go to a BCS bowl and I reminded them of that."

Florida State lost at home by double digits for just the third time under Bowden and the first time since 1989 against Clemson.

"It was an incredible streak that you hate to see go," Seminoles tailback Nick Maddox said. "We have to come out our next home game and start a new streak."

The Seminoles committed six turovers and allowed freshman quarterback Chris Rix to be sacked seven times. Rix completed 13 of 30 passes for 222 yards and threw four interceptions.

Even the bounces went Miami's way. The Hurricanes took a 42-20 lead when they botched a field goal attempt only to have holder Freddie Capshaw grab the bad snap and run seven yards for a touchdown.

Dorsey completed 14 of 27 passes for 249 yards. Two of the throws were touchdowns to Andre Johnson, who caught five passes foe 111 yards.

The Hurricanes struck first when Edward Reed blocked a punt by Chance Gwaltney that Markese Fitzgerald returned five yards for a touchdown 6:12 into the contest. Less than two minutes later, Dorsey threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Johnson.

The Hurricanes went ahead by 21 points early in the second quarter on a one-yard pass from Dorsey to tight end Jeremy Schockey on fourth and goal.

The Seminoles finally scored midway through the period on a six-yard run by Greg Jones.

Florida State cut the lead to 21-13 when William McCray scored on a one-yard run five seconds before halftime. The drive was kept alive when an interception by Reed was negated due to a penalty.

The Hurricanes took over in the second half, beginning with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dorsey to Johnson.

Less than a minute later, defensive end William Joseph stripped Rix of the ball and linebacker Jonathan Vilma returned in 36 yards for a score.

Rix answered with a 57-yard touchdown pass to Talmar Gardner before Capshaw's score and a two-yard touchdown run by Willis McGahee made it 49-20 after three quarters.

The only score of the fourth quarter was a 73-yard fumble return by Florida State's Michael Boulware.
