Anaheim 2, Washington 1

ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Jason York's goal snapped a tie with 5:07 remaining and Steve Shields made 28 saves as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim edged the Washington Capitals, 2-1, Friday night in their home opener.

While falling down, Keith Carney slipped the puck to Paul Kariya rushing down the left side. Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig stopped Kariya's blast from the left faceoff circle, but York was in front to easily put home the rebound for his second goal of the season.

Shields preserved the victory with consecutive saves on Ulf Dahlen and Trevor Linden with less than four minutes to go.

Steve Rucchin scored 5:04 into the second period for the Mighty Ducks, who won their fourth straight home opener and are unbeaten in their last five (4

1). They started the season with a 1-3 East Coast road trip but will play 11 of their next 13 games at home.

Calle Johansson tied the game at 13:31 of the second period and Kolzig stopped 25 shots for Washington, which played without star right wing Jaromir Jagr. He left Wednesday's victory over the New York Rangers with a leg injury and is day to day.
