Calgary 4, Chicago 0

CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Roman Turek made 23 saves for his second straight shutout Saturday night, leading the Calgary Flames to a 4-0 blanking of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Acquired from St. Louis in a draft day trade, the 31-year-old Czech has posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since Dec. 18-21, 1999. He opened the season Thursday with a 1-0 whitewash of Edmonton.

Defenseman Derek Morris and Jarome Iginla each recorded two assists as Calgary got goals from four different players.

Craig Conroy started the scoring for the Flames by tipping Morris' point shot under the crossbar 19 seconds into the second period. Dave Lowry gave Calgary a 2-0 lead 84 seconds later when he scored on a rebound from the left side of the net.

The Flames took a commanding three-goal lead midway through the final period when Marc Savard carried in on a two on one and fired the puck just inside the left goalpost.

Craig Berube capped the scoring in the final minute by tipping Morris' slap shot from the point past goaltender Jocelyn Thibault.

Chicago nearly spoiled Turek's shutout with less than five minutes to play. Steve Sullivan one-timed a cross-ice pass from Michael Nylander from the left side, but Turek got his pad over to block the shot.

The Flames had never opened the season with consecutive shutouts. The last time they started with two wins was the 1993-94 season.
