PITTSBURGH, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday signed 35-year-old right wing Stephane Richer, who has 407 career goals but sat out last season after claiming his heart wasn't in the game.
Richer might end up playing on a line with Mario Lemieux, Pittsburgh's 35-year-old owner who resumed his Hall of Fame playing career last season but lost linemate Jaromir Jagr in a trade to Washington.
A native of Quebec, Richer has 407 goals and 384 assists in 986 regular-season games, recording 50-goal seasons for Montreal in 1987-88 and 1989-90.
While he clearly has lost a step in recent seasons, Richer showed enough in training camp to earn a contract with the Penguins.
After scoring 146 goals in five seasons with the Devils, Richer rejoined the Canadiens in 1996-97. But he combined for only 63 goals over the next four seasons while playing for Montreal, Tampa Bay and St. Louis.
Richer signed a one-year contract with Washington prior to last season but retired in September after only one practice, telling the team his heart really wasn't in it the previous couple of seasons.
