Ailing sea turtles rescued on Cape Cod

QUINCY, Mass., Nov. 29 (UPI) -- About 40 hypothermic sea turtles have been found on Massachusetts' Cape Cod and are being brought to the New England Aquarium's care center, officials say.

Sea turtles often become stranded from early November through December, The Boston Globe reported.

Around this time of year, volunteers often stake out coasts to rescue sea turtles that become stranded.

Although sea turtles are cold-blooded, they are susceptible to infections at such low body temperatures, New England Aquarium spokesman Tony LaCasse said in a statement Wednesday. The aquarium takes the endangered reptiles and warms them up 5 degrees a day until their body temperature reaches slightly more than 70 degrees.
