DUBLIN, Ireland, July 17 (UPI) -- Approval of funding for citywide wireless broadband in Dublin, Ireland, could be settled by the end of the year.
New Lord Mayor Vincent Jackson said he did not expect much opposition to the plan, which he said cost relatively little and would bring about economic benefits to the city.
The Sunday Business Post said the project will cost around 3 million euros ($3.8 million) but would provide Internet access to laptops in the entire metro area via antennae mounted on city lampposts.
''We're no longer a low-cost economy," said Jackson. ''Research and development is the way of the future. As a city, we should be technologically advanced and a world-beater."
The Post said a number of wireless providers have expressed interest in taking part in the project.
