Drug cuts transfusions, fatigue in chemo

LEUVEN, Belgium, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A new study of darbepoetin alfa, a compound that stimulates red blood cell production, shows it reduces the need for transfusions and cuts fatigue in cancer patients. The drug was approved only one month ago by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in treating anemia in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
