Scottish brewery creates ‘not for gays' beer and sends case to Vladimir Putin

ABERDEENSHIRE , Scotland, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A Scottish brewery created a beer that pokes fun at Russia’s anti-gay laws and sent a case of it directly to the man in charge, Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In addition to sending the beer to the president, BrewDog put cases of the beer, called “Hello, My Name is Vladimir,” outside the Russian Consulate in Edinburgh and the Russian Embassy in London.

“We've not heard anything from Mr. Putin, but we expect he’s out petting a leopard somewhere, probably with his top off," brewery co-founder James Watt told the Independent.

The beer’s label includes a notation that reads "not for gays" in small print.

The full description reads:

"Hello, my name is Vladimir. I am 100 per cent hetero and will pass laws to prove it. Drinking me gives you energy, ignorance and dogmatism required to shoot a deer (with your top off) and pass internationally denounced, discriminatory legislation (top optional) before you've even had your caviar breakfast."

Fifty percent of beer sales will go to charitable organizations that support oppressed minorities.

The brewery produced the double IPA beer shortly before the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics began to “hold up a mirror to discriminatory legislation signed off by Mr. Putin.”

The beer has done well. "We've had tens of thousands of tweets about it -- there is a lot of support for the beer and the cause,” Watt said.
