TORONTO, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- During an interview on Tuesday, councilor Doug Ford refused to answer questions about how Toronto Mayor Rob Ford got to and from a Steak Queen restaurant while intoxicated, but he did say that “the people don’t care” about his brother’s personal problems.

After the video surfaced showing the mayor speaking in Jamaican patois while at the restaurant last week, the mayor admitted he had been drinking.

“You guys feed on this stuff, and that’s fine,” the councilor said. “You guys can work on the personal issues until Oct. 27 … but you’re out of touch. You’re out of touch with what the people care about. People don’t care about that. What people care about … is making sure their taxes are low, that they have good employment here.”

Councilor Ford said the Steak Queen footage must be old, claiming his brother hasn’t had a drink since November.

“Rob’s a lot heavier in that picture than what he is now … obviously that’s him, but it didn’t happen last night,” Doug said. “I truly believed, without talking to him, without seeing it, that he had stopped drinking. Obviously, you know the story. You can drag this out.”

The councilor blamed the media for targeting his brother. “You always want to go after him personally… guys, you want to get personal, I want to talk about the budget,” he said. “And we’re going to talk about the budget. How the rest of the council is disrespecting the taxpayers of this city. They want to increase taxes on the backs of hardworking Torontonians.”
