Rep. Leslie Combs says 'It happens' after accidentally firing gun at Kentucky State Capitol

Some people are taking shots at a Kentucky politician after she accidentally fired one off in her office at the State Capitol in Frankfort on Tuesday.

Rep. Leslie Combs was in her office unloading her Ruger 380 semi-automatic handgun when it went off. Rep.

Jeff Greer was the only other person in the office at the time and neither lawmaker was injured.

“I’m a gun owner. It happens,” Combs said.

Combs has a concealed carry permit for the gun which makes it legal for her to bring the loaded weapon to the Capitol and keep it in her purse.

“I was purposely disarming it to put it up because I didn’t like it and I didn’t want to use it anymore,” Combs said. “I had had it in my purse I carry usually, and I thought I’m going to put that sucker away.”

No charges will be filed in the incident, but that doesn’t mean people are pleased about it.

“I think we need to really look at whether or not we’re going to allow guns around here. I tried to prohibit them several years ago, and it did not meet with success,” Democratic Rep. Mary Lou Marzian. “I’m certainly not wanting to take guns away from people, but maybe keep them in our cars if people have them, to not bring them around to where there are going to be children walking up around the halls.”

Combs has her supporters as well.

“Guess she needs to be more careful,” said Republican Rep. Stan Lee. “I don’t have a problem with her having a gun, but you need to be careful using one.”

Democratic Sen. Robin Webb agreed. “As a responsible gun owner I don’t want to see my Second Amendment rights impugned,” she said.
