(UPI) -- Residents of a Denver apartment complex got a scare on Tuesday when one bullet shot through four different homes -- all of which were occupied at the time.

Police were processing a crime scene at the Torrey Pines Apartments for hours in an effort to understand how this so-called accident happened.

The alleged shooter told neighbors her gun went off accidentally, resulting in a stray bullet that ricocheted through four apartments before stopping. Once police locate the accidental gunwoman, she could be facing reckless endangerment charges.

Residents are thankful no one was hurt.

“We were just in shock. We didn’t know whether to get down or run,” resident Caroline Hankins said. “We are just lucky that it didn’t hit any of us in any of these units.”

Hankins was inside with her partner, Angel Gray, when the gun went off.

“I just got up and I looked and I saw the two bullet holes and was like, ‘Holy crap,’” Gray said. She also indicated that the bullet came within about a foot of striking one neighbor in the head.

"It really made me angry because we have a 4-month-old living next door; that they just moved in. We are all safe and I thank God for that," she said.
