(UPI) -- It took four days to figure out that a man who was brought to the hospital early Thursday morning had been shot, not stabbed, and Flagstaff, Ariz., police were finally on the lookout for two armed robbery suspects by Monday.

Police received a “man down” call early Thursday morning but it wasn’t immediately clear to the Flagstaff Police Department that a shooting had occurred.

“Originally came in as intoxicated subject, man down call,” said Deputy Chief Walt Miller.

“We were then told he was stabbed. Then we were told the stab wound looked suspicious, leading us to believe that he fell and possibly impaled himself at a nearby construction site,” Miller aded.

The victim was taken to the hospital, but he was unresponsive so police did not investigate further. That is, until Monday afternoon, when they were told otherwise.

“We were told he was shot as a bullet was found after further medical exams,” Miller said.

The victim finally answered questions late Monday and indicated that the motive for the shooting was an attempted robbery. The suspects were described as “two white males in a black car.”
