In Manhattan, the smell of maple syrup has been mysteriously wafting through the city air.

This isn't the first time the smell has filled the squares of New York's city blocks. Years ago, New Jersey plant Frutarom was determined to be the culprit.

The aroma has risen several times since 2005, when Mayor Michael Bloomberg identified the factory as the cause.

But Frutarom is refusing to comment on whether they are the ones producing the smell. The North Bergen, N.J., company is one of the world's largest fragrance and flavor makers. The company is not allowing employees to take questions on the syrupy smell.

“We’re not commenting on that,” the unidentified employee said.
