LG held a public event in Seoul Friday to promote its new G2, and promised 100 people would receive the flagship smartphone for free. Instead, 20 people were reportedly injured.

In an attempt to play on the theme "G in the cloud," LG decided to float certificates for the free phones in balloons over the crowd, leaving them to their own devices in retrieving them.

Armed with long-handled spears and BB guns, the crowd went after the prize-filled balloons and injured 20 attendees in the process.

Among the less dangerous ideas, one attendee used sticky balls of tape attached to long strings, meant to be thrown at balloons, and another brought a butterfly net.

After the first bundles of balloons flew too far too fast, the crowd trampled their way to the third bundle as an event worker attempted to cut them loose.

LG has said it will pay for all medical expenses resulting from the event. "We will provide them with proper medical treatment as we are responsible for the event," the company told The Korea Times. LG has canceled similar events across South Korea.

As it turns out, most of the balloons quickly flew beyond the crowd's reach, so nearby residents should keep an eye out for deflated balloons on the ground.
