July 31 (UPI) -- Police in Michigan responded to a call about an unusual animal crossing a road and arrived to find a loose alligator wandering around.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded about 4:20 a.m. to a call from a driver in Oceola Township who reported an alligator had crossed the road in front of her car.

Deputies arrived to find an alligator was indeed at the side of the road and was captured near the base of a nearby pine tree.

The 2-foot-long reptile, which weighs about 10 pounds, was taken to the Livingston County Animal Shelter.

Shelter officials said the gator will be taken to the Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary in Athens, Mi., if it is not claimed by an owner.
