June 7 (UPI) -- A California couple who ordered a bicycle online were surprised when the package arrived with an unexpected stowaway -- a bearded dragon lizard.

Riverside County Animal Services said Al Brummett and Chris Brummett, who live near Hemet, bought the bicycle as a gift for their granddaughter. They were unpacking the box when they discovered the unusual passenger.

"At first I freaked out because he was so big," Al Brummett said. "Here was this massive lizard looking over his shoulder at me."

Brummett said the lizard seemed confused.

"There he was, and he had this look, such as 'what the heck just happened?'" he said. "And I'm thinking, 'yeah, me too.'"

Animal Services officers Carra Mathewson and Harvey Beck responded and identified the lizard as a bearded dragon, an Australian species legal to be kept as pets in California.

"Somehow that bearded dragon ended up in that box and who knows how long it had been in there. It's a wacky tale for sure," Mathewson said.

Investigators said the lizard might be an escaped pet that crawled into the box during the packing process. They are trying to track down the owner.
