June 5 (UPI) -- A Florida police officer who recently moved from Michigan got a crash course in local flavor when he spotted a three-legged alligator crossing a road.

The Tampa Police Department said in a Facebook post that Officer Wells, who moved to the area from Kalamazoo last year, was on patrol when he spotted the approximately 5 1/2 foot alligator walking across a road.

Wells contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and ended up helping trappers capture the gator, which was found to be missing a leg.

"Officer Wells, welcome to Florida," the Facebook post said.
