Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Animal rescuers in Britain responded to a field where two girls found a sheep with its head stuck inside a hole in the trunk of a tree.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Animal Collection officer Kim Sheriff responded Monday to a report from two girls who discovered the stuck sheep in a field in Hawkshaw, England.

"I have never quite seen anything like it," Sheriff said. "I must admit, I was left scratching my head wondering why on earth this ewe put her head inside the tree trunk in the first place!"

Sheriff said the sheep's panic was preventing it from freeing itself.

"She was really distressed and was trying desperately to free herself. Goodness knows how long she'd been trapped like that. Thankfully, I was able to calm her down and maneuver her so I could gently free her from the tree," Sheriff said.

"She wasn't injured and, unsurprisingly, seemed to be feeling a little sheepish so ran off back to join her flock. This girl had definitely been baaaaa-king up the wrong tree!" she said.
