Nov. 6 (UPI) -- New York's famous Lincoln Center fountain was shut down for cleaning after a prankster dyed the water a Gatorade-like electric yellow.

Surprised onlookers posted photos and videos to social media after the fountain's water mysteriously turned a bright shade of yellow about 1 p.m. Saturday.

"Gatorade colored fountains today at Lincoln Center. Beautiful fall day to walk through the city!" Sean Cullen Carroll wrote on Instagram.

Lincoln Center said the unusual color change appeared to be the work of an unknown prankster.

"A water based yellow dye was put into the fountain," Lincoln Center spokeswoman Mary Caraccioli told the New York Daily News. "The fountain is being cleaned. Our security team notified the NYPD."

No arrests were reported in connection with the incident.
