Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Wildlife officials in Canada shared photos of a "pretty cool sight" -- a rare albino skunk spotted in Prince Edward Island.

Fish and Wildlife PEI posted a pair of photos to Facebook showing the all white skunk photographed in the province.

"This was sent into us and it's a pretty cool sight...albino skunk," the post said.

"It's more or less a completely white skunk, and this is caused by a genetic mutation in the animal itself," Ken Mayhew, an information officer with Forests, Fish and Wildlife, told CBC News.

"This is the first one I personally have heard about, but having this type of thing happen within mammals is not unusual," he said. "I wouldn't say that they're really common but they do show up from time to time."

Mayhew said albino animals often have short lives due to their coloring making them stand out to predators.

"Usually those types of things are weeded out of the population fairly quickly," Mayhew said.
