Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A Maryland man on a failed car-buying trip was encouraged by his grandmother to cheer himself up with a lottery ticket and ended up $50,000 richer.

The 19-year-old man and his grandma told Maryland Lottery officials they had taken a trip to look at a used car in Glen Burnie and ended up disappointed when they were unable to purchase a vehicle.

The grandma said she encouraged the man to cheer himself up by buying a lottery ticket at a nearby Slide In Mart while they waited for their Uber ride home.

"I could see he was down so I suggested that he get a ticket," the grandmother said. "He picked out Powerball because of all the talk about the giant jackpot."

The man gave the ticket to his grandmother to check while she was out shopping.

"It said to take the ticket to the Lottery, so I did," the grandma said of when she used a machine to check the ticket.

The woman discovered at Lottery headquarters that the ticket won $50,000 from the Aug. 23 drawing.

"It was pretty crazy," the young man said. "To get that kind of help out of the blue at a time when we weren't sure how we would be able to make everything work, it's just amazing."

The man said he plans to use his winnings to finish the job of buying a vehicle and pay for his school tuition.

"This takes away some of the worries we've all been facing," he said.
