Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. Coast Guard said it has solved the mystery of a tiny mermaid house found floating hundreds of miles from shore in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard 8th District Heartland said the shed, which is perched atop a floating dock with railings on three sides, was found floating about 1 p.m. Wednesday in a Gulf of Mexico location about 180 miles south of Grand Isle, La.

The Coast Guard sought more information about the unoccupied structure, which had a mural of a mermaid on a sandy beach on an outside wall, and announced Thursday that the mystery has been solved.

Officials said the shed and dock had been located behind the Parrot Key Hotel in Key West, Fla., and was unoccupied when it apparently broke free of its moorings during a tropical storm and drifted away.
