Maine police rescue lost farmer searching for cow and newborn calf

Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Police in Maine helped rescue a farmer who got lost in local woods while searching for his missing pregnant cow.

Farmer Ron Van Heeswijk called local police and firefighters in Camden after his pregnant cow wandered away from his pasture and into nearby woods on Monday evening, the Penobscot Bay Pilot reported.

The next day Van Heeswijk went out searching for the cow himself and was forced to call authorities again after he got lost in the woods himself.

His frightening predicament quickly turned into a joyous rescue when he found the missing cow settled between a stand of trees with a healthy newborn calf.

Camden Police Sgt. Dan Brown and Chief Randy Gagne drove to the edge of the woods at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday and sounded their siren to guide Van Heeswijk toward the road. When the farmer got close enough the two officers joined him in the woods and worked to transport the cow and her calf to safety.

A Knox County Sheriff's Deputy picked up the newborn calf and carried it into a police cruiser with air conditioning to keep it cool, WABI reported.

Police drove the calf home, while others lured the mother back to the farm with a bucket of grain and guided her along the a local road with a tractor.

The farmer, his cow and her new calf eventually managed to make it home and were all safe and in good health.
