July 28 (UPI) -- The top mermaids in Great Britain will gather this weekend to determine who will earn the title of Miss Mermaid U.K.
Women from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were invited to compete in regional pageants and the finalists will gather at Billing Aquadrome in Northampton on Saturday.
The winner will be adorned with a special crown and receive the opportunity to compete in the Miss Mermaid International final in Egypt in November.
Participants in the pageant are required to be females between 18 and 32-years-old who live in the U.K. and have strong swimming skills.
Grace Page, the 25-year-old reigning Miss Mermaid, explained to the BBC about the skills she thinks are necessary to do well in the competition.
"If you want to be a professional mermaid it is essential that you train as a free diver and hold a free diving qualification," Page said. "This will allow you to be able to hold your breath for longer periods of time and, more importantly, you will be able to do so safely."
Page said entering the pageant fulfilled a childhood dream.
"Like most young girls growing up, I always wanted to be a mermaid," she said. ""I've always had a passion for singing, and, since a young age I've loved having long naturally blonde hair, and the sea fascinates me - so creating a career around actually performing as a mermaid just made so much sense."
Page added that the international pageant differs from the traditional perception of pageants by focusing on community service.
"Whilst in Egypt [where the international finals are held] a huge focus of what we did was giving back to the community and raising awareness for marine conservation," she said. "We visited local schools, did litter picks at the beaches and removed litter from the sea and reefs and even put together some awareness videos."
In addition to a trip to the international pageant in Egypt, Miss Mermaid U.K. will receive a mermaid tail courtesy of Magictail, a free diving and mermaid swim course, a one-year contract with Hire A Mermaid U.K. and an underwater photoshoot.
