July 7 (UPI) -- A New Jersey resident snapped photos of a mother bear who stood on her hind legs in an apparent attempt to push her way through a glass door.

The Mahwah Police Department shared photos of the resident's close encounter with the mother bear and a cub that wandered into the person's yard in the Rio Vista section of the city.

The photos show the mother bear stand on her hind legs, with her front paws pushing on the glass mere inches from where the resident was standing.

"They were concerned, obviously, with the bear trying to get into their home," Mahwah Police Lt. Scott Scherven told WPIX-TV.

Police said the incident was one of three reported bear encounters this week in Rio Vista, which borders a large wooded area.

Authorities are urging residents to keep their garbage protected and not to leave out food that could attract bear attention.

"It is their natural environment," Scherven said. "But we will monitor area."
