June 13 (UPI) -- A toy boat launched by a class of Florida fifth-graders four years ago traveled at least 500 miles to reach a South Carolina beach.

The Edisto Police Department posted photos to Facebook showing the small boat, which washed up Monday on Edisto Beach.

"The boat had a letter stating that it was a fifth-grade class project from Summit-Questa Montessori School in Davie, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale," Edisto Beach Police Chief George Brothers wrote in the Facebook post. "We brought the boat back to the department and I called the school to let them know that we had recovered the boat. They told me that they had last launched the boat four years ago. I can't imagine where it has gone in that time!"

Brothers told ABC 4 News a local man later revealed he had recently spotted the 3-foot boat drifting in Charleston Harbor. He said the man was given permission to relaunch the boat in Charleston.
