April 14 (UPI) -- Police in Texas said an abandoned box at the side of a road turned out to have some unusual and adorable contents: baby owls.

The City of Kaufman Police Department said in a Facebook post officers responded to City Lake Park Tuesday after a resident reported discovering the box of baby owls at the side of the road by the park's entrance.

"Last night our officers were called to City Lake Park because someone had dumped 5 baby owls in a box at the park. They will be on their way to a bird rescue facility in Hutchins shortly. Did you know that baby owls hiss when they are scared (or angry)?!?!?" the Facebook post said.

They were taken to the Rogers Wildlife Rehab Center, where staff said they appear to be baby barn owls.

"They are in good health," center director Kathy Rogers told KXAS-TV.

Rogers said the baby owls appear to range in age from 2 weeks to 3-1/2 months old.

She said the owls still act wild, which is a good sign for the rehab process.
