NEW YORK, June 14 (UPI) -- New York police shared photos and video from the rescue of a red-tailed hawk that crashed into a window and became trapped between glass panes.

Lydia Cotter said she and her son were home at their Upper East Side apartment Monday afternoon when they heard the sound of glass breaking from another room.

"I didn't see initially what happened, but I heard the glass break," Cotter told WABC-TV.

New York Police Department officers responded and helped the family get the bird from the window to a cage.

The NYPD 19th Precinct tweeted photos and video of the hawk being removed from between the window panes and placed in a cage.

"When we were capturing him, his wings went out quite far, so yeah, a big bird and strong in order to break that window," Cotter said.

Witnesses said the hawk appeared distressed before crashing into the window.

Police said the hawk was released outside after it was evaluated and found to be uninjured.
