CHESNEE, S.C., May 18 (UPI) -- A South Carolina woman set an unofficial record in the 100 yard dash just days after her 100th birthday.

Ella Mae Colbert, a retired school teacher from Chesnee, broke the previous record of one minute and 16 seconds set by fellow centenarian Ida Keeling when she completed the dash in 46.7 seconds on Tuesday.

Colbert began her attempt at the record by stumbling on her first attempt shortly after leaving the starting line, before being patched up with a bandage and trying again.

"I think I started off too fast," she told WSPA. "You'll have some trials and you'll have some things get in your way but you don't let it get you down. Get up again."

Colbert ran track through high school and said that walking three miles a day and caring for her niece and nephews help keep her in shape and allow her to eat what she wants.

"I try to get it in every day that I can," she said of her exercise. "I eat everything. It doesn't hurt me."

Her track career came to an end after Colbert "got a little bored" and decided to pursue a career in education instead.

She went on to teach elementary school for 36 years and hoped that her performance would inspire other students to seek similar achievements.

"I want you to do your best so when you get to my age, you'll be running too," she said.
