Russian rescuers free orcas trapped by ice floes

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, Russia, April 20 (UPI) -- The Russian Emergencies Ministry said specialists freed three orcas trapped by ice floes on the far-east island of Sakhalin.

The ministry shared video showing the specialists in rowboats Tuesday using ropes and long poles to clear paths through the ice floes for the orcas to escape.

Three of the rescuers can be seen jumping into the water to help guide the orcas.

The ministry said three of the killer whales were successfully freed from the ice floes while rescuers were still working to help a fourth.
