Police: 'Slow chase' ends with capture of street-walking tortoise

GROVER BEACH, Calif., April 6 (UPI) -- A California police department said "a slow chase" ended in the detention of an unusual jaywalking suspect -- a tortoise.

The Grover Beach Police Department said in a Facebook post officers responded to a report of a stray tortoise wandering in the streets Tuesday and they were able to capture the reptile after "a slow chase."

"At this point the tortoise, though in custody, is being well cared for," the post reads.

The Facebook post includes a photo of the tortoise after being loaded into a patrol vehicle.

Police aid they are now trying to identify the owners of the apparent escaped pet.

"Oh, and we did not find the hare, too elusive apparently," the department joked.
