BARMOUTH, Wales, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- A 10-foot-long Mako shark was found washed up on a Welsh beach, far from its home in tropical waters.

The Mako shark, a species responsible for 42 attacks on humans and three fatalities in the past three decades, was discovered by fishermen Friday on Barmouth Beach in north Wales.

The carcass was photographed by passerby Gwion Liggett, who shared the snapshots online.

"This creature is beautiful alive or dead and the rare chance to be so close to one is a real experience," he wrote on his Facebook page. "It is sad. Amazing creature. I wonder what happened to it."

Liggett told ITV the discovery has some locals feeling nervous about the water.

"It has got that feeling of Jaws and Amity Island," he said. "A lot of people will be hesitant to get back in the water after this. Maybe it is fortunate it has happened at this time of year so people can have some time to get over it. If it had happened in summer then I think a lot less people and holidaymakers would be in the water."
