GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Brian Tennant, a former corrections officer for the Kent County Jail in Michigan, has been sentenced to five years probation and received a $10,000 fine for distributing marijuana butter.

Tennant said he didn't realize it was against the law to distribute marijuana to his friends and coworkers.

"I didn't think I was doing anything wrong," he said during his trial on Thursday, according to WZZM.

Tennant only gave marijuana butter to people with medical marijuana cards, he claimed, so he thought it was okay. He does not have a medical marijuana card. He gave it to his wife and three other corrections officers.

"As a criminal justice major from Michigan State University and a sworn law officer would impose on you the responsibility of knowing what the law is and its requirements," Judge Dennis Leiber told Tennant.

Tennant and three other corrections officers were arrested by local police when their shipment of marijuana butter was traced to an associate's house.

Another officer who pleaded guilty, Sgt. Timothy Bernhardt, died before his trial.
