PILGRIMS WALK, England, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Residents of a British village said they are baffled as to how a porpoise corpse ended up in an alley a mile from the nearest coast.

Pilgrims Walk residents said the porpoise, a relative of dolphins, was first spotted about 6:05 p.m. Saturday in a pool of blood in an alleyway.

"It was all very surreal. Your eyes were seeing a porpoise, but your brain just wouldn't process it," resident Tim Allen, 31, told the Worthington Herald.

Allen said the 4-foot-long mammal's body was still warm when it was discovered and it appeared to have been dragged.

"If it was put there as a joke, it wasn't a funny joke," he said.

The carcass was taken to the Zoological Society of London for an investigation. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is participating in the probe.

"At present, we are not aware of any animal welfare issues but it is hoped tests will provide answers to this," an RSPCA spokesman said. "He may have died from natural causes and washed up on the beach, and then later transported inland."
