RECIFE, Brazil, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A flash of light believed to be from a meteor illuminated the night sky over a Brazilian city for several seconds.

The light, which was caught on video about 10 p.m. Wednesday, lit up the sky in red and yellow as an apparent meteor streaked across the sky over Recife.

Twitter users also reported seeing the light in Pernambuco, Paraiba, Alagoas and Rio Grande do Norte.

The object was described by some as a UFO or a flash of lightning, but local experts said it was likely a large meteor from a shower caused by debris from the tail of Halley's Comet. The comet passes close to earth every 76 years and is next expected to visit the inner solar system in 2061. The Orionid meteor shower will peak Oct. 20 and 21 this year.
