David Karn, of the Canadian Ministry of Environment, told NBC News Lloyd would not have survived the attack if his hunting partner had not shot and killed the bead.
"The bear is a grizzly bear boar and it is believed at this time to be the only bear involved," he added.
The attack comes a month after a mother grizzly killed a hiker as she defended her cubs.
Lloyd was transported by helicopter to Calgary hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition.
