Queen Victoria's bloomers sold for nearly $10,000

Westernhanger Auctioneers said an auction featuring bloomers and silk stockings worn by Queen Victoria fetched thousands.

FOLKESTONE, England, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A British auction house said a pair of Queen Victoria's bloomers boasting a 52-inch waist sold for nearly $10,000.

Westernhanger Auctioneers near Folkestone, England, said the big bloomers from about 1890 sold for $9,879 to a buyer who asked to remain anonymous.

A pair of the queen's silk stockings sold at the same auction for $1,753.

"The items are very large," auctioneer Michael Hogben said. "She wore them towards the end of her life when she had eaten a lot more than most people could afford to."

"When Queen Victoria died she gifted a lot of her under-linen to her loyal servants," he said. "These bloomers have been in a Kent family for more than 80 years. These are some of the most interesting items I have auctioned in my 40-year career."
