Des Moines animal control officers capture loose goat

DES MOINES, Iowa, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Animal authorities in Iowa said they are trying to determine the origins of a goat found wandering a Des Moines neighborhood.

Animal control officers said they responded to the Southeast Street area around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a loose goat running around the area, but they were unable to locate the animal, The Des Moines Register reported Friday.

Animal control officer Tina Updegrove said she returned to the area shortly after 10 a.m. and quickly locked eyes with a Boer goat.

"As soon as it saw me, the thing just jetted into traffic," Updegrove said. "There were horns blaring."

Updegrove said the goat fled into a nearby car dealership lot and the owner closed the fence, trapping the animal.

"We tried to corner her, but she was having none of it," Updegrove said. "Tranquilizing her was the next best thing. She was really stressing, so we wanted to get her back here safely."

Police said they are attempting to find the goat's owner. Boer goats are not allowed inside the city.

"We're asking the owner to come forward to claim the goat," Des Moines Chief Humane Officer Sgt. James Butler said. "And explain why the goat was on the lam as long as it was."
