SEMINOLE, Fla., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A Florida woman said a pit bull she is looking after for her son while he is deployed in Afghanistan rescued her cat from a group of coyotes.

Sherree Lewis of Seminole said she has been taking care of the dog, Jack, while her son, Peter, is in Afghanistan, and the dog formed a strong bond with her cat, Kitty, that paid off recently when the feline was attacked by coyotes, WTVT-TV, Tampa, Fla., reported Tuesday.

"One had her by the neck and the other had her by the tail," Lewis said.

She said the pit bull jumped into action.

"I didn't know Jack could run that fast. He was on them so fast," she said.

Jack quickly freed Kitty from the coyotes and chased the wild animals away.

"Jack is a hero. He saved the Kitty's life and he just shows how good dogs can be. Big dogs can protect you, especially if something like this happens," she said.

Lewis said Kitty was taken to a vet and treated for her injuries. She said Jack has been watching over the feline while she recuperates.

"He probably feels like he's the caretaker. He checks on her every day and sniffs her, seeing what kind of shape she is in," she said.
