Syrup smell wafts through New York, New Jersey plant suspected

NORTH BERGEN, N.J., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- A New Jersey plant refused to comment on whether it was responsible for the odor of maple syrup wafting through New York.

The smell of maple syrup has been reported in Manhattan several times since 2005 and Mayor Michael Bloomberg once identified the Frutarom plant in North Bergen, N.J., as the source, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

However, a woman who answered the phone at the plant refused to comment on whether it was the source of a Wednesday morning odor.

"We're not commenting on that," the woman said.

Frutarom's website describes the company as a "multinational flavor and fragrance house creating, producing, and marketing a large variety of flavor and fragrance compounds and ingredients."
