TURIN, Italy, July 5 (UPI) -- Police in Italy said they charged a man with practicing dentistry without a license after a woman said he performed oral surgery on her at a friend's home.

The patient -- identified only as a 31-year-old woman -- said she paid 2,300 euros ($2,951) for a tooth-reducing procedure to a Syrian man who was recommended by a friend, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Friday.

The procedure is corrective surgery meant to lessen the width of teeth and provide more room for proper spacing in the mouth.

The patient said she felt ill after the procedure, performed in a friend's kitchen, and reported him to police.

Police cited the unidentified man, who disappeared after the incident, for bodily damage and practicing medicine without a license.

The woman's friend, who also went missing, was cited as well, ANSA said.
