Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe NESQUEHONING, Pa., April 22 (UPI) -- Warden Joseph Gross of Pennsylvania's Carbon County prison said thousands of dollars are being saved by having an inmate assemble new beds from raw materials. Gross told a Prison Board meeting last week he discovered big savings while assessing the need for 18 bunk beds. Advertisement The warden said buying the beds would cost more than $11,000 but it would be only about $3,400 to "purchase the raw materials ... and we could make our own bunk beds because we have an inmate here, assigned to work-release, who is a welder," the Lehighton (Pa.) Times News reported Monday. Gross said the inmate volunteered to assemble the beds under the supervision of prison maintenance supervisor Charles Neff. The board approved the $3,400 cost for the project.
