GLASGOW, Scotland, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- A Scottish bra maker said its research indicates women's lingerie fashions follow a 40-year cycle of vintage styles coming back into vogue.

The firm Ultimo said its research indicates lingerie fashions tend to return about 40 years after their popularity, with one example being the padded bras developed in the 1950s making a comeback in the 1990s, The Sun reported Monday.

The company said stockings and suspenders in the style of the 1960s became popular again in the 2000s amid a burlesque dance craze.

"Trends come around in lingerie as they do in fashion and it doesn't surprise me that it works on a 40-year cycle," Ultimo head Michelle Mone said. "It used to be that we changed our lingerie to suit fashions, but now underwear is setting the styles before outwear."
