The ruse fell apart Friday when the men realized the machine was bolted to the floor, the report said.
As soon as the men left, the clerk called police and gave them a description of their van.
It was pulled over soon after and 41-year-old Marc Cadieux was charged with impersonating an officer, possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose, theft over $5,000, and using an imitation firearm, the QMI Agency reported.
Cadieux was out on bail for two previous charges of making threats.
Constable Tracy Wolbeck, an RCMP spokeswoman, wouldn't confirm if the uniform was authentic, but said removing a cash machine "is not typical" of police behavior.
