NEW YORK CITY, N.Y., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- A New York City woman says she was reunited with her cat, blind in one eye, after a year of searching online.

"I always felt he was alive, even though I had down days," said Karen Hansen, 54, a Brooklyn special education teacher who was reunited with her cat Sammie Oct. 9, the New York Daily News reported.

The two were reunited when Hansen received a call from a woman who said she believed Sammie was in a pack of stray cats she fed.

"I started looking and I said, 'Gee, I think I feed this cat,'" said Teri Vanzo, who saw Sammie's picture online while searching for homes for the strays. "I had a feeling it might be him when I read that the cat in the picture was blind in one eye."

Hansen said she didn't get her hopes up, as she had gotten several false tips before.

"I just figured it was another mistake," said Hansen. "But when I got out of the car, the first thing I said was, 'That's my cat. That's Sammie.'

Hansen said Sammie disappeared by slipping out the front door of her home Oct. 9, 2010.

"I turned my back ... and we never saw him again," Hansen said. "He just disappeared. It was heart-wrenching."

Hansen covered her neighborhood with flyers in multiple languages, put notices in the Daily News and posted the cat's photo across the internet.

The support Hansen received was overwhelming.

"People we didn't even know wanted to help us," Hansen said. "I just couldn't believe it."
