RICHMOND, R.I., July 14 (UPI) -- Authorities in Rhode Island said they captured an escaped emu spotted running along a Richmond roadway.

Richmond police said the emu escaped July 5 from a West Greenwich property without the owner noticing and authorities soon received calls about the large flightless bird, native to Australia, running alongside a roadway, The Providence (R.I.) Journal reported Wednesday.

Police said Animal Control Officer Anne Fisher was able to corner the bird, estimated to weigh 75 pounds and measuring about 5 feet tall, with the help of two civilians in Dawley Park.

Fisher returned the emu to its owner, who was not identified, along with a $25 animal-at-large citation.
